Electricity & Water
Free Basic Electricity (FBE) is an initiative introduced by the government to provide low-income households with free access to electricity and an improved quality of life.
This program stands as a lifeline for qualifying households in all municipalities across South Africa. It offers a predetermined monthly allocation of free electricity, intended to meet essential needs such as lighting, media access, ironing, and water boiling.
How to Know if You’re Eligible for FBE
To qualify for FBE, households must meet specific criteria. To determine your eligibility, you need to reach out to your local municipality, which will provide the necessary information and guidance on how to apply for the program.
The Monthly FBE Allocation
The amount of FBE units allocated per household varies by municipality. Tokens are available from the 1st of each calendar month and are valid only for that month. It’s important to keep in mind that unused tokens do not accumulate and are forfeited if not claimed.
